Image title:
Tucked into a blanket
Image description:
Scanning electron microscope image of a coccoid cell of Borghiella tenuissima. This cell is particularly remarkable because it was originally documented by the researcher Wołoszyńska, who created a single illustration of it. This drawing dates back to 1917, and the cell has not been documented again until now. During an experiment conducted as part of my master’s thesis, I was able to rediscover this unique coccoid cell form, more than 100 years after Wołoszyńska’s original observation. The characteristic honeycomb pattern typical of Borghiella species is also still visible in the periplast.

Amazing discovery after a century! I love the image as well. It looks as if the cell is poking out of my screen!!

Ich war vor einiger Zeit auch am überlegen ob die Forschung an Algen mich nicht interessieren würde.
Das Foto regt mich an wieder darüber nachzudenken

A friend of mine made me aware of your thesis.
I find it fascinating to compare the drawings of Woloszsynska with the pictures you took.
You must be proud of yourself.
The preparation must have been very demanding to create the pictures in this quality.. especially the fact that you can even see the honeycomb pattern typical for this species.
I have never seen it in this quality.
