Plocamium trees

Image description:

These are exquisite branches of the red seaweed Plocamium lyngbyanum. The branches are appoximately 3 cm long and their beauty only truly comes alive under a microscope. I collected this plant from by the Milford Haven maerl bed as part of a project to look at the distribution of Plocamium species (of which 4 are known) in Britain and Ireland using photography and genetic sequencing. I photographed the specimen in the laboratory using an Olympus OMD E-M1 Mark II with a 90 mm macro lens and Helicon Focus stacking software.

Nice capture. Such a great seaweed to observe close up. I only usually find this free floating or as drift on the beach here in Sussex.
