Luminescent Symbiosis

The dinoagellate Breviolum minutum is a symbiont of corals and sea anemones. They reside within these animals and partake in nutrient exchange with them, fuelling the vast biodiversity of coral reefs. You see here an image of thousands of Breviolum cells harboured in the gastrodermal cells of the sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana, which sizes a few centimeters in diameter. Taking advantage of the autouorescence of Breviolum, we use a stereo microscope with lasers to observe the fluorescence of dinoagellate cells within the sea anemone.
