A world of its own: Ceramium sp.

Image description:

Unconspicuous at first, yet sort of a world of its own: Ceramium. These rhodophytes are special in many different ways. Their visible, see-through cells offer a window for researchers like myself to study pathogens such as oomycetes and endophytes in algal systems. This picture was taken in May 2026 (Kiel fjord); I was just starting on my bachelor's thesis. I quickly noticed a lot of epiphytes and diatoms growing on the Ceramium individuals I was studying. While they are a nuisance or contamination to some, I found them nice to look at - especially the yellow, goldenish pigments go well together with the strong red phycobiliproteins of the rhodophyte.
