Slimmy photosynthetic thingies

While surveying for Fucales at Saltö, Sweden, I found this slimy world on wave-battered rocks. Appearing as an otherworldly mosaic is the combined work of the cyanobacterium Rivularia atra and the rhodophyte Nemalion elminthoides, their contrasting forms weaving intricate patterns across the rocky surface. Wet with spray and caught under the Nordic raking light, the scene felt less like a Swedish shore and more like the surface of an undiscovered world. Image taken using an OLYMPUS TG6.
