This is a dark-field image of a Klaus Kemp slide found at the University of Nottingham. When completing my final-year project for my biology degree I discovered the amazing world of diatoms, which then became the basis of my project. The University has a small collection of diatoms slides made by Klaus Kemp, a diatomist who unfortunately died in 2022. He created beautiful patterns like this one on a microscopic scale by placing diatom species in various arrangements. Images like this one highlight how beautiful the natural world is and the ever growing connection between art and science.
