Beauty revealed: Caloglossa leprieurii

Caloglossa leprieurii is a small leafy red alga that is generally inconspicuous in its natural habitat but reveals its beauty when viewed under a microscope. These specimens were collected from the Swan Estuary, Perth, Western Australia and mounted when fresh on slides. The image is a collage of several tetrasporic specimens, the sporangia visible as dark spots arranged in chevrons. The scale bar is 300 µm.
