The early stage of a giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) sporophyte after fertilization. Although starting of as a tiny organism, this sporophyte will become a towering giant kelp that is the foundation of the kelp forest ecosystem. This image was taken with a darkfield microscopy technique with a 5x magnification and with focal stacking to enhance depth of field.
