Algae have an efficient photosynthetic system which allows them to live at great depths. Confocal microscopy techniques have made it possible to discover that these organisms contain large amounts of fluorophores, molecules responsible for their autofluorescence. It is believed that this photochemical phenomenon is related, in addition to photosynthetic activity, to carrageenans. This photo shows a feast of colorful cells in the reproductive thallus of Hypnea, collected at a depth of 55 ft associated with rhodolith beds in the Coiba National Park in Panama.
