Buried in the abundant spring periphyton are the puzzling colonies of the diatom Encyonema. It lives in tube-shaped colonies that seem improbable for a diatom to produce. This image was taken as part of a fun class competition (professors get to compete too!) at the Iowa Lakeside Lab's Ecology and Systematics of Diatoms class that has been offered each summer for the last 60 years!
