Diatom Colony of Licmophora from plankton

This a live colony of the Licmophora benthic diatom that grows attached to seaweed and other organisms on the seashore. When disturbed they can enter the plankton and in early May 2024 they became unusually abundant in the Milford Haven waterway. This specimen was from a collection made from a pontoon. Using DIC lighting and x200 magnification the photograph is a composite of 15 stacked images.
