Image title:
Macrocystis pyrifera at the End of the World
Image description:
I took this photograph on a week-long sailing and scientific expedition to explore Kelp forests (Macrocystis pyrifera) at the very tip of Argentina, in Península Mitre, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. The focus was to measure the density and distribution and the species that were found in these ecosystems. Kelp forests are great mitigators of the climate crisis because they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, provide habitat to many species, and to many coastal communities they are a source of food and protection from growing tides.

Wow! These photos remind me of my days kayaking with my dad through the Beagle Channel in Ushuaia, where kelp forests are everywhere! Not everyone notices its beauty, but also the importance of the kelps. Congratulations!
