Cells of the diatom Coscinodiscus sp. from Adriatic Sea, arranged in a geometric-fashion design after isolation and cell division, resembling an abstract art painting in the style of Kandinskij. Coscinodiscus is a cosmopolitan genus of centric diatoms that play a key role in marine primary productivity. Its cells are characterized by very large dimensions (up to 500 µm in diameter) making Coscinodiscus a "giant" protagonist in the microscopic world of phytoplankton.
