Nodules of calcified red algae called rhodoliths create microscale ecosystems hosting great diversity in the three-dimensional structures that make up their thalli. These aggregations provide support for the establishment of other species of algae and invertebrates such as this cnidarian of the genus Exaiptasia, which allows us to show that the ecosystem services provided by ocean bioengineers are more relevant than we imagine and know about them.
