Painting Diatoms

Image description:

The Diatom Conticribra weissflogii is known for the formation of chitinous strands that give it buoyancy. Staining with Calcofluor White makes the strands appear like a magical painting drawn by the diatoms themselves. The cells are shown in red, using their natural autofluorescence. The image was taken with a Zeiss Axio Imager.M2 microscope with Axiocam 705 mono at 100x magnification, phase contrast. C. weissflogii was isolated in the German Bight near Helgoland together with its natural bacteria community.
