The image shows the phenomenon of chlorophyll fluorescence being emitted by the species Closterium ehrenbergii. Thanks to this microscopic technique, it is possible to recognize the three-dimensional lamellar structure of the chloroplasts, which in contrast only appear as flat green organelles in normal light microscopy. Due to the intentional absence of a blue filter in this image, the cells appear as floating "banana-like" cells in their natural aquatic habitat.
