A bloom of bioluminescent Noctiluca scintillans led to this spectacular phenomenon. N. scintillans is a cosmopolitan marine dinoflagellate. It lights up under mechanical stress, e.g. when waves hit the shore or when boats sail through the water. It is the reaction between luciferase and luciferin which leads to the emission of light. This image was taken on a fieldtrip to the northern sea on Sylt (Germany) in April 2024. (Camera settings: Nikon D3500, 22 mm, f/3.8, 10s, ISO 3200, no flash)
