Tropical Kelp of the Galapagos

More waters more than 50 meters deep in the Galápagos Islands, a mysterious kelp population grows among vibrant octocoral gardens, where less than 1% of surface light penetrates. Up to 150 cm tall, these kelps were first discovered in 2018 and are closely related to Eisenia galapagensis and E. arborea, though their exact species identity remains under investigation. Captured with a GoPro mounted on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), this image reveals the striking colors and beauty of these mesophotic communities.
