Lepocinclis sp. from Xochimilco. Euglenoids are a fascinating group of microorganisms that move on their own, but they can also do photosynthesis and accumulate their energy in paramylon grains, a starch-like sugar. This photograph shows details of a cell, such as the pellicle, many small chloroplasts, a red eyespot, with which it detects the intensity and direction of light and eight paramylon grains. These many grains mean that this cell is very healthy. The image was taken on an Olympus BX50 with a 40x objective using oblique lighting. Frame is approximately 150 µm long.
