Cool kelp (Alaria esculenta)

Image description:

Ocean warming 'loser' kelp Alaria esculenta - a rare sighting along the Cornish Coast. Once more common along the coast of SW England, Alaria is now becoming increasingly rare, likely reflecting regional ocean warming trends. However, this cold-temperate kelp continues to flourish in Scotland, where populations remain abundant and support high biomass. Alaria loves exposed rocky shores with strong wave action, but I spotted this specimen in a large rockpool at spring low tide on Kenidjack beach in Cornwall. This image was taken during a survey assessing climate-driven shifts in kelp forest structure and long-term changes in community composition.
