This picture is from a freshwater sample from a small pond. It shows an Cyanophyceae: Nostocales: Nostocaceae: Nostoc sp. (right) and an Bacillariophyceae: Naviculales: Naviculaceae: Navicula sp. (left). I've seen a lot of beautiful algae under the microscope, but when this colony came into focus, it took my breath away for a moment. It looked like a huge shining planet or moon and then these tiny diatom popped into view. It seemed like a spaceship in a dark universe that wanted to visit this alien moon. For me, this photo symbolizes that the world of microorganisms is its own little universe, the beauty of which far too few people are aware of.
