Bull kelp growing on Chondracanthus. Never had I come across such a chaotic, yet beautifully dense pocket of annual kelps at my now favorite dive site in central California. Normally when I see kelps growing on other algae its typically on the woody stipes of Pterygophora as they're quite rigid. In this case, thinking about how many factors would have to fall in place for bull kelp to recruit and grow on a much more flexible species is mind boggling, but also knowing that these individuals (particularly the Chondracanthus) surely didn't last much longer.
