Image title:
Sticky Stalks of Cymbella
Image description:
A Cymbella species is presented in the image that dwells on mucilage stalks. During the formation of a stalk, a thick gelatinous substance (EPS) is secreted through apical pores in the valves of this diatom. Some species, like Cymbella janischii, are considered invasive, forming thick mats of mucilage stalks in rivers. The three-dimensional features of cells and mucilaginous stalks of Cymbella sp. were taken using confocal microscopy Z-stack imaging (Zeiss LSM 900 at 20x). A part of the colony was used to visualize glycan/glycoprotein in stalks using FITC-conjugated concanavalin A (green), nucleus stained with DAPI (blue), and chlorophyll auto-fluorescence (red).
